AVID K-12
Creating Engaging and Rigorous Classrooms lays the foundation of instruction that allows students to access rigorous coursework and content. Educators will learn how to use Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading (WICOR®) student-centered instructional practices and explore the framework of AVID Digital Learning: The 4 A’s® to meaningfully integrate digital strategies to differentiate instruction and increase student agency. Participants will learn techniques to build connected communities through relational capacity activities to foster supportive and equitable learning spaces.
Digital Teaching and Learning cultivates educator agency by empowering educators to engage with and immerse themselves in digital tools and resources that support primary and secondary students. Utilizing the 4 A’s® AVID Digital Learning framework, participants will explore instructional technology trends by delving into critical subjects like digital citizenship, responsible use, and AI in education. Participants will collaborate with fellow educators to investigate how technology-rich environments nurture and elevate Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading (WICOR®) skills.
Student Success is a foundational differentiated professional learning experience that examines instructional strategies and methodologies that support the AVID Tertiary and Career Readiness Framework and Essential Skills in learning environments outside the core content areas. Educators will learn the importance of disciplinary literacy, experience WICOR in action, and understand how to craft learning experiences that support rigorous academic preparedness, student agency, and student success skills for their specific role.
Cultivating Writing Schoolwide redefines writing as a powerful tool for learning, thinking, and student agency for secondary educators across all content areas. Participants will explore the AVID Focused Note-Taking, Critical Reading, and Writing Processes while engaging with the four academic modes of writing: descriptive, narrative, expository, and argumentative. This course emphasizes metacognitive writing and disciplinary literacy, helping students write like content experts. Through collaborative strategies and the AVID Tertiary and Career Readiness Framework, educators will leave equipped to cultivate confident, capable writers in every classroom.
Career and Tertiary Pathways lays the foundation for articulating what future readiness looks like for students and explores how AVID instructional strategies foster student success. Educators will learn how to actively engage students in developing employability skills like inquiry, collaboration, and organisation to support their long-term post-secondary studies and career aspirations.
AVID Emerge provides educators with a toolkit of practical routines and practices to differentiate for students who are new to learning English or who are not meeting year level expectations in reading and writing. Through intentional lesson design and delivery, AVID Emerge supports academic language and literacy development. Educators use the content of the AVID Emerge Digital Toolkit.
*Please note: The AVID Emerge Toolkit incurs an additional cost.
Transforming Literacy Through Content-Area Reading is designed for educators who want to deepen students’ access to rigorous content by embedding the AVID Critical Reading Process into daily instruction. This course focuses on building content-area literacy across all subjects—helping students read, think, and communicate like scientists, historians, artists, and more. Participants work with diverse texts, scaffold comprehension, and design lessons that develop academic thinking skills and support meaningful engagement with content.
English empowers educators to elevate literacy instruction through the AVID Critical Reading and Writing Processes, WICOR® strategies, and the AVID Tertiary and Career Readiness Framework. Through an in-depth exploration of lesson design, academic discourse, and collaborative literacy strategies, participants will examine how reading, writing, speaking, and listening intersect to foster student agency and access rigorous content, ultimately transforming their classrooms into spaces where students think critically, communicate effectively, and thrive.
Science combines WICOR® strategies with inquiry-based learning to enhance student engagement and foster scientific thinking. In this course, middle and high school science educators will explore disciplinary literacy, collaborative structures, and the AVID Focused Note-Taking Process using interactive notebooks to integrate engineering design, critical reading, and real-world phenomena. With interactive activities like the Rube Goldberg challenge and magazine ad investigations, participants new to AVID or refining their practice will discover how to energize their instruction and empower students to think, read, write, and collaborate like scientists.
Mathematics: Cultivating a Discourse Rich Classroom inspires mathematics educators to transform classrooms into vibrant spaces of student voice, critical thinking, and collaborative problem-solving. Through WICOR® strategies, mathematical language routines, and the AVID Tertiary and Career Readiness Framework, participants will explore how to foster a culture of academic discourse where students justify reasoning, connect representations, and co-construct meaning. This Community of Practice equips educators with practical tools to make mathematics visible, rigorous and engaging – for every learner, every day.
History/Social Science/Humanities lays the foundation for educators to create a learning environment where students read, write, and think like historians. Participants will experience and design learning around rigorous Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organisation, and Reading (WICOR®) methodologies to scaffold learning, promote critical thinking and increase student engagement.
