Our Professional Learning Approach

High quality, continuous professional learning is critical to keeping teachers’ skills and knowledge relevant and effective. But not all professional learning is equal. Passive, single-session professional learning that is not responsive to a school’s needs wastes time, money and effort, and has little impact on student learning.

The 2019 Victorian Auditor-General’s report reiterates this point in its findings, explaining that professional learning is too often “ineffective”, “once-off, generic events” occurring outside the classroom with “limited capacity to explore the diverse needs of every teacher”. The same report found that high-quality, continuous teacher-professional learning is critical to improve teachers’ confidence, competency, and capabilities over time.

AVID is committed to providing high quality professional learning. Our integrated professional learning system is based on the latest research and includes high-engagement teaching strategies that can be adapted to students from kindergarten to university. The structure and coherency of AVID’s professional learning system accelerates school improvement, teaching quality, and student learning outcomes.

Three Levels to Build and Support a Continuous Improvement System

Individual upskilling of teacher’s capabilities, confidence, and competence at our premiere Path and Summer Institute professional learning events. These events run over two to three days and use an immersive model where the teacher becomes a student in the classroom to directly experience high-engagement teaching strategies as a learner.

Two days of customised professional learning at every school that is co-designed with an AVID coach. Professional learning is contextualised around the school’s strategic plan to achieve priority improvement goals and targets.

Ongoing leadership coaching as schools build internal capability in developing and delivering their own professional learning modules based on internal data analysis. This stage enables schools to build internal capability and become self-sustaining in designing high-quality professional learning. AVID Coaches support schools to develop teachers’ capabilities in leading professional learning.
